The bead, object of fascination, is a common element of every people in the world and has been the first artistic creation, the first ornament of human beings. The bead is one of the oldest manifestations of the abstract thought; this is the reason why I decided to work on this classical theme. I wanted to actualise it, to refresh it. _During the summer 2005, I had the opportunity to learn the fabrication of the glass bead in Murano, Venice. Since then, the bead -with all what it represents- was the main part of my research, but because of the complexity and the opulence of this theme, I was forced to focus the subject of my degree's work.

I chose to work on the formal aspect of the pearl by giving my personal interpretation to the traditional pearl necklace, revising its shape in different ways.

I experimented different materials, looking for a large diversity concerning the techniques and the final perception.
Sometimes the pearl is only suggested, sometimes it's carved in the mass, built layer by layer or around a central axle.
The formal research also comes with a technical research, going from the easy manual work to the use of modern technologies.
I learned to carve alabaster, to work with porcelain and with ordinary materials, like cellophane paper and different kinds of silicon. In my final choice, I adopted different techniques, from the laser cutting to some more traditional and manual methods.

By creating necklaces, I wanted to keep the principal characteristic of the pearl; its whiteness and roundness, but introducing some variations that make it actual, unique.
I wanted to play on the diversity of the sensations of the pieces who have a common theme but who are, each of them, handled in a different way. Each of the necklaces are part of the same gender: the pearl necklace.
Some look elegant, classical, the others are more playful, fragile, or even quite rough. Each material that I used creates a specific sensation. So the textures, the sounds and the weights are different.

To go beyond the common pearl necklace -simple, classical and wearable- that we wear without questioning ourselves, I wanted to play with some of my pieces and hide this usual aspect and this first function of the necklace. To discover some of the necklaces, we have to unfold, to unpack them first. It is a playful research that reminds of the search and the surprise of the pearl researcher who first has to catch the oyster and then to open it, hoping to find the desired object!

When I return to my childhood memories I saw almost immediately my grandmother playing with a string tied. Nothing more simple. With only his hands as tools, she transforms this simple string in a variety of forms. She teaches me the steps to follow to create the Eiffel Tower, a bowl, a parachute and other figures. This insignificant string, after some manipulations, opened us the doors to a magical world where imagination is queen.

It is this simplicity, this game and this idea of puzzle that inspired me to create a necklace that can be shaped as we desire and according to our mastery of the following manipulations. The beads are placed on a elastic thread in silicone transparent which allows them to interlock with each other when we pulled it.

In traditional societies the fineries, as identification pieces, show the rank, the age, the membership in a special clan or tribe. Some may be trademarks of power and dignity, enhance virility or embody warrior's bravery as the emblem of hunting prowess. In our civilization, the pearl necklace usually imposed by the social status it represents. It would take here the characteristic of an emblem of manual achievement following the example of the valiant warriors. Perhaps it would be even more impressive if it demonstrates to others the ability of the owner to create certain shapes or imagine new ones.

In my approach, I associate the game, recalling the childhood, to the pearl necklace, which as an emblem of social status refers to the adult.
The traditional pearl necklace commonly worn nowadays in my opinion has lost its past imposing bearing. I tried to transpose it into the world of childhood to give it a more entertaining aspect. Through this game of manipulation this mutant necklace, by its ability to interlock, takes new shapes and volumes each time.

My grandmother has agreed to pose for these pictures, testing the collar and the 2 procedures that she has selected from among those which I have proposed. But these are only a few possibilities among the multitude of forms imaginable.
